Microsoft fears platform breakup
The tech giant told an EU judge it'll suffer serious harm if forced to provide a version of Windows without Media Player, as ordered by EU anti-trust regulators. While Microsoft has said it could disconnect the audio-visual software from its operating system if forced to, some Windows functions would not work with rival media players. Microsoft is appealing the EC's ruling that it was unfairly curbing customers' access to rival audio software. Microsoft rose 2% to 28.25.
Redback warns of Q3 shortfall
The telecom equipment maker guided its revenue outlook below views of $34 mil to $20 mil-$22 mil, a 20%-27% drop from the year-ago $27.4 mil revenue figure, blaming a slowdown in spending by phone companies. Rival Avici Systems also slashed its revenue forecast, and Andrew warned of a quarterly loss on weak demand. Redback Networks fell 34% to 3.44.
