Family Dollar profit marked down
The deep discount store matched Q4 views of 26 cents a share, down 7% from a year ago. Sales rose 9% to $1.32 bil. Other discounters have complained that rising gasoline prices are crimping consumer spending. Family Dollar plans to continue an aggressive store expansion, opening 500 to 560 stores this year. Shares fell 2% to 27.10.
** Outback Steakhouse's Sept. same-store sales rose 1.2% while their Carraba's Italian Grills sales rose 1.8% and its Fleming's Prime Steakhouse sales shot up 11.6%. Shares rose 3% to 41.53.
** Guess Sept. same-store sales rose 13.6%, helped by increased monthly promotional activity intended to maintain low inventory levels of its designer jeans and clothing. Shares rose 4.5% to 17.81.
** Staples got a 5-year, $275 mil contract from Bank of America. Shares rose 2.5% to 29.82.
