WASHINGTON -- States are pooling their resources to combat the rising cost of prescription drugs, according to a National Governors Association (NGA) issue brief entitled, "Purchasing Pools for Prescription Drugs: What's Happening and How Do They Work."
According to the NGA, prescription drugs currently account for about 10% of national health expenditures. In its publication the association outlines solutions states are employing to reduce the costs associated with prescription drugs while more efficiently managing the wide range of pharmaceutical benefits.
"Access to quality affordable prescription drugs is critical for an aging America; prescription drugs help shorten hospital stays and improve medical conditions--but they offer little reward if some of the patients who need them most can't actually afford to buy them," comments John Thomasian, an NGA director.
"By highlighting some of the successful pioneering efforts and best practices around the country, this report is a blueprint for governors and other policy makers looking to take advantage of the various intrastate and interstate pooling plans available," he says.
