Vioxx, the drug that has helped spare millions of people from the pain of arthritis, was yanked off pharmacy shelves Thursday after its maker announced the drug appears to double patients' risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Throughout the Lowcountry, rheumatologists spent the day fielding phone calls from arthritis patients wondering what to do now. They're advised to stop taking the drug and come in for a visit to determine an appropriate substitute.

"This is a medicine that's helped a lot of people, but if the company sees enough problems to withdraw it, then what can we do?" said Dr. Edwin Smith, a rheumatologist and professor of medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. "People need to stop taking it."
