A UN forum on the future of world cities strengthens the case for planning as part of any sustainable urbanisation strategy, maintains Cliff Hague.
Four thousand people have come to Barcelona to talk about how to make cities more sustainable and equitable places. The theme of the second UN World Urban Forum is Cities: Crossroads of Cultures, Inclusiveness and Integration?
The forum is the main platform for addressing governments about urban development. People from different countries and roles join in formal dialogues that feed into the UN process of working towards the implementation of its millennium development goals. These include concerns for environmental sustainability and improvements in the lives of slum dwellers. A message from Kofi Annan stresses that unless cities can make progress on inclusiveness and equity, they will be 'potential flashpoints of conflict and reservoirs of poverty'.
