Shortly after 6 a.m. on June 9, 2002, police in Plattsburgh, New York, responded to a 911 burglary call and found Andrew Leroux lying dead on a sidewalk near the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Crouthers. Leroux had been shot once in the chest by Mr. Crouthers, who believed that Leroux had been attempting to break into his home. Leroux, a college student, had reportedly been drinking heavily during a party, had left, and may have mistakenly thought he was returning to the party when he stumbled onto the Crouthers' porch.
