Equitable sues to force Allied Stores to fill vacant Dadeland Mall space. (Equitable Life Assurance Society)

MIAMI -- Equitable Life Assurance Society wants Allied Stores to either open up in Dadeland Mall or get out.

Equitable owns the giant regional mall in Kendall, but claimed in Dade County Circuit Court in a suit filed May 6 that Allied Stores General Real Estate Co. and Federated Department Stores are blocking the way for Equitable to take control of the space and expand the mall.

"The essence of the suit is to ask the court for a declaratory judgment that Allied is obligated to do business," said attorney Martin Schwartz with Rubin Baum Levin Constant Friedman & Bilzin in Miami, representing Equitable.
