Shipping agents warn that a change the Panama Canal Authority is considering in how it charges for stored boxes may double the transit costs for fully laden box vessels.

ACP administrator Alberto Aleman met with representatives of the container industry in Panama recently and is to meet the World Shipping Council and International Chamber of Shipping to discuss changing the method of measuring containers stacked on deck.

An ACP source said the changes could result in an increase in transit fees of up to $40 pet TEU.
