Jan. 9--NEWTON, N.C.--A Catawba County sock factory will close this year, costing the Hickory region another 290 jobs.
Burlington-based Gold Toe Brands Inc. will start phasing out jobs at its Newton plant in March and plans to close the facility by July, said Ken Barnwell, vice president of human resources for the company.
The factory's knitting functions will move to Burlington, and the finishing operations will go to Mexico, Barnwell said. The company probably will sell the plant, which has been part of the Gold Toe group since 1980, he said. The company makes the Gold Toe brand socks found in area department stores, as well…
