Feb. 10--A lawyer has called for the closure of a legal loophole that allows people who are not copyright owners to demand money from users of services such as music played in karaoke venues.
People claiming to own copyrights intimidate karaoke operators into paying them money by showing them certificates of power of attorney, said the lawyer, who declined to be identified.
Many small operators faced the problems and did not know how to respond because they were unsure of their rights, he said of moves to amend the 1994 Copyright Law to ensure a fair system of royalty collection.
