** Lotus founder Colin Chapman was one of Burt Rutan's first customers. It's a little-known piece of both automotive and aviation history, a moment when two geniuses from largely separate fields came together and just clicked.
In 1981 Chapman, an experienced pilot and then three decades into his reign as a master sports car and race car designer, wanted to create a small, high-performance airplane to be sold under the Lotus name. He sought out Rutan, then well known for his unconventional kit-plane designs, aircraft that outperformed Cessnas and Pipers in virtually every way, including speed, range and cost.
