Let's cut to the Chase: NASCAR changed its points system to a 10-driver, 10-race "playoff'' to hold fans' attention and maintain TV ratings in the fall, when football dominates the sports landscape. And, of course, to keep more drivers and more TV-happy sponsors in the title hunt as long as possible.
Instead of traditional points throughout the 36-race season, this year's first 26 races culled the Cup contenders to 10. The Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond was the cutoff race, so there were far more story lines than usual. If NASCAR wanted attention, it worked.
