Indy Racing League officials vowed to slow their teams down after a rash of pit stop problems-eight in the past five events-and it appears they're doing that.
Chief steward Brian Barnhart (above) held Sam Hornish Jr. and Dario Franchitti out of the first practice session at Chicagoland Speedway last weekend for their mistakes at the previous race, in Nazareth.
Hornish left his pit box before the fuel nozzle had been disengaged, causing the hose to tear. A fire followed. Franchitti bumped Scott Dixon in a Saturday practice.
"We've tried fining these guys and black-flagging them, and this is the next step,'' Barnhart said. "We've got to find the deterrent.''
Barnhart also delivered a fiery speech in the drivers meeting, saying the rules for pit stops had worked for 99.5 percent of the laps (his calculation) this season. "I don't need to change the rules,'' he barked.
Barnhart instructed the drivers to change their habits. Mostly, he wants them to slow down. Almost all of the eight mishaps were caused by top-tier teams trying to improve their positions during pit stops.
Said Franchitti, who has been involved in two of the problems: "Brian's right. Is sitting people down the right way to do it? I don't know if it's for me to say. But something has to be done.''
