Hot rumor
There is strong speculation in Europe Ford Motor Co. will rebrand its woeful Jaguar Rac-ing Formula One team "Ford Grand Prix,'' and has signed off on a budget substantially increased by savings from a withdrawal from the World Rally Championship. If Ford Grand Prix is created, the word is M Sport, the U.K. organization that builds and operates the Focus WRC rally cars, will likely continue without official works backing so Ford can keep a toe in the WRC water.
O'Connell gets a Caddy
General Motors' Cadillac CTS-V team will field a third car for round nine of the SCCA Speed World Challenge GT at Road Atlanta on Sept. 24. GM Racing driver Johnny O'Connell, 2003 ALMS GTS co-champ, will drive the car, joining fellow racers Max Angelelli and Andy Pilgrim. O'Connell will compete in two races during the weekend because he will also continue his role with the Corvette team.
O'Connell, who recently tested the CTS-V race car at Michigan's Gingerman Raceway, has won four races in the ALMS and leads the GTS drivers' championship along with his teammate Ron Fellows.
Cadillac has four podium finishes this year, including three poles and two wins in eight rounds of World Challenge. With two races remaining the team is nine points behind first place in the manufacturers' championship. Pilgrim and Angelelli trail the lead in the drivers' championship by 22 points and 42 points, respectively.
