Mar. 1--State agencies must improve Thailand's food quality and hygiene standards if the country wishes to increase its exports to China, Japan and other world markets, says Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak.
Thailand and China are likely to announce a bilateral free trade agreement this year, abolishing tariffs on vegetables and fruits. Thailand is also holding talks with Japan on a freer two-way trade.
Dr Somkid said that if Thai food exporters wanted to capitalise on trade liberalisation, greater attention had to be paid to quality and hygiene standards.
