Feb. 12--The government has spent 18 billion baht to buy 2.98 million tonnes of paddy, or unprocessed rice, from farmers under a price-support programme for the 2002-03 season.
Rice volume was below the original estimate of 3.5 million tonnes authorities had planned to buy from farmers from Nov 1 to the end of this month at guaranteed prices.
About 2.31 million tonnes of white paddy were purchased at 5,100-5,200 baht a tonne, 580,000 tons of fragrant paddy at 7,000 to 7,500 baht, and 89,000 tonnes of glutinous paddy at 5,800 to 6,000 baht.
