Apr. 4--Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra yesterday ordered the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) to subsidise power generation costs of about nine billion baht each year for the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA).
Since 2000, the subsidy had been carried by the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA). The change is aimed at easing the way for the privatisation of both the PEA and the MEA.
Mr Thaksin said the PEA had higher costs than either Egat or the MEA.
Egat's stronger financial position and greater revenue levels meant it was the more appropriate agency to oversee the subsidy. The ...
