May 2--The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in April rose by 1.6 percent from the year before, slightly higher than the 1.4 percent year-on-year increase posted in March, according to Karun Kittisataporn, the permanent secretary of the Commerce Ministry.
Last month's CPI was 105.9, compared with 105.5 the month before. For the first four months of 2003, inflation as measured by the CPI rose by 1.8 percent year-on-year.
Mr Karun said the small increase in the CPI in April from the month before reflected the fact that fear of Sars did not affect domestic consumption.
