May 1--The government plans to scrap the export quota on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), most widely used for cooking, due to the large drop in its market price.
The Energy Business Department had set the quota and an ex-refinery ceiling price on locally produced LPG in February when oil prices surged over concerns tied to the coming war in Iraq. The aim of the quota was to prevent a shortage as local producers were inclined to sell the product overseas where they could get a higher price.
Currently, the market price for LPG is around $270 a tonne, down from $360 two months ago. The ex-refinery ceiling was set at $315.
