May 1--Despite the European Union's announcement of its intent to preserve its sensitive service sectors such as health and education, Thailand aims to negotiate with the trade bloc to open some areas of those sectors that would not directly affect Europeans, according to a Thai trade official.

The EU's top trade official, Pascal Lamy, said the EU had just submitted its proposal on freer trade in services to the World Trade Organisation. He said the existing proposal would offer companies and individuals in developing countries more opportunities in the EU.
