Jul. 3--The United States has extended duty-free trade benefits to some US$900 million worth of products from various countries including Thailand, a move aimed at helping developing nations and providing momentum for global trade talks.
President George W. Bush signed a proclamation expanding the product coverage of the Generalised System of Preferences, which waives tariffs on products for countries that have no bilateral free-trade agreement.
Last year, imports valued at more than $17.5 billion entered the US duty-free under this programme, according to the US Trade Representative's office.
