Jul. 1--The gap between the poor and rich in Thailand remains wide, despite improvements in the overall standard of living, according to the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB).
NESDB researchers, at the agency's annual meeting on development strategies yesterday, said the wealthiest 20 percent of the population controlled 56.2 percent of the country's national income, up from 54.2 percent fifteen years ago.
The poorest 20 percent of the population had only a 4.2 percent share of national income, compared with a 4.6 percent share in 1988.
Overall, the agency said that about 6.2 million people remained under the poverty line. ...
