Jul. 29--DALLAS, Texas--Senior citizens across Texas have been called at their homes and told that they have won a foreign lottery in places such as Canada or Australia.
All they had to do was wire money to pay the taxes on the winnings or to pay for the money transfer.
Then they sat back and waited for a windfall that never came.
Last year, 244 Texans fell for the scam, wiring almost $1 million to Canada during seven weeks.
Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, who was in Dallas on Monday, said it is a rapidly growing crime against seniors and urged them to be alert.
"Victims have mortgaged their homes, lost life savings and wired money from bank accounts to crooks running these scams," Abbott said in a statement.
