Jul. 23--TALLAHASSEE, Fla.--Florida telecommunications companies are teaming with the state to promote an expanded residential phone service for low-income residents.
Verizon, BellSouth, Sprint and the Florida Cable Telecommunications Association said Tuesday that they will work with the state Office of Public Counsel, Department of Elder Affairs and Department of Children & Families on a public awareness campaign for the expanded Lifeline program.
Lifeline subsidizes basic phone service to low-income Floridians who otherwise couldn't afford residential service.
"The state is committed to making sure all eligible Floridians are aware of this telephone savings program," said Jack Shreve, former public counsel. "We are launching this public awareness campaign with the telephone companies to take the Lifeline message into our communities and homes."
