Aug. 4--The Excise Department plans to hire outside contractors to help conduct market surveys to ensure that taxes are being properly paid by retailers, according to department director-general Sathit Limpongpan.
Eighteen products are liable for excise taxes, including petrol, automobiles, cigarettes, alcohol and beer.
Initial focus for the field surveys, to start in early 2004, will be on beer and carbonated drinks, with the department investigating to see whether paid taxes match up with claimed sales. Private market research companies will be retained to conduct the surveys.
