"Full Metal Jacket," Stanley Kubrick's 1987 Vietnam War movie, breaks neatly into two sections.
Its first part, a horror story of military training, has a brilliance and brevity that bring to mind the chilling tales of Edgar Allan Poe. The rest of the film is more ambitious but less successful: It tries to be the definitive statement about not only the war in Vietnam but also about War.
