CHARLOTTE, N.C. _ Flood-weary North Carolina mountain residents find themselves Saturday recovering from the second storm in nine days _ this one claiming eight lives, forcing dramatic rescues and sending chunks of mountainside tumbling onto hundreds of roads.
The heavy rain and wind delivered Thursday and Friday by what was left of Hurricane Ivan brought renewed pockets of misery to an area still recovering after the remnants of Hurricane Frances gorged rivers and creeks just days ago.
Friday's flooding forced hundreds to evacuate, threw more than 200,000 customers into the dark and paralyzed travel throughout the state's western region where roads _ including a section of Interstate 40 _ had to be closed until they are cleared of mud and rock.
The flooding came swiftly to a saturated region. Jeff Ballenger of Asheville arrived at his Precision Tune shop in Biltmore Village at 8 a.m. EDT and found streets clear.
A half-hour later he watched as water from the Swannanoa River gushed into the enclave of quaint shops and restaurants.
