What began as a 10-acre brush fire raged out of control Monday into a 900-acre wildfire that threatened homes and closed part of the Central Florida Greene Way in south Orange County.
Hunter's Creek was the latest Central Florida neighborhood endangered by brush fires sparked by the region's persistent drought. Several other blazes continued to burn Monday, pumping smoke and haze into the sky.
In Hunter's Creek, firefighters ordered the evacuation of the nine homes closest to the flames, said Orange County Fire-Rescue Lt. Vince Preston. Residents were allowed back after about an hour. The fire got to within 20 feet of some homes, he said.
No homes were destroyed, but John Mellusi, a sales manager for Colonial Homes, said some houses suffered minor damage such as melted areas on pool enclosures. Most of the homes threatened were new onesin the western…
