A reader sent an e-mail, saying you don't have to be Jewish to get a lot out of the observance of Rosh Hashana, which began Wednesday evening and ends with Yom Kippur on Sept. 25.

We often hear Rosh Hashana described as the Jewish new year. But it's nothing like the secular new year we celebrate on the first of January.

The eve of Rosh Hashana begins a solemn period of reflection leading up to Yom Kippur, which is a day of atonement. The universal message is that we must take stock of own own behavior. And that means taking time to examine the essence of who we are.
