GETTING THERE: New Zealand is a long way from everywhere, as far as Americans are concerned. It's roughly a 13-hour nonstop flight from Los Angeles or San Francisco, and service is offered by Air New Zealand, Qantas and United Airlines.
Driving. If you rent a car, wait until you arrive and shop around. Most cities have tourism offices where you can find deals, and short-term rentals of late-model used cars with unlimited mileage are available for around $20-$25 a day U.S. Long-term is even better. I got a three-month rental for $125 U.S. a week. Gas costs just under $2 U.S. a gallon.
