SYDNEY, Australia _ The United States got off on the wrong foot in the synchronized swimming team competition and never recovered.

That lone, unidentified, unsynchronized foot mistakenly shot out the water just seconds into the Americans' technical program Thursday. International judging being the inexact science it is, it's not certain how much it cost the U.S. team. But it cost something.

The U.S. women earned a score of 33.530 in the technical program, which counts for 35 percent of the overall score. That left them fifth in a field of eight, .257 out of medal contention. Though they rebounded Friday with what they agreed was a beautiful execution of a demanding freestyle …
