SAN FRANCISCO _ Midway through his fourth season with the Detroit Lions, Bobby Ross surprisingly resigned last Monday as coach, citing his lack of energy.

Midway through his fourth season, 49ers coach Steve Mariucci said he can relate "a little bit" to Ross' resignation.

Mariucci, however, remains energetic and optimistic, and he isn't about to follow Ross' lead and flee the downtrodden 49ers (2-8).

"Steve's handling it great. I've seen Steve in an emotional state, but it doesn't approximate to anything like a Bobby Ross," 49ers general manager Bill Walsh said Thursday. "He's been devastated after losing. It's not that he should be, but it's understandable."
