SANTA CLARA, Calif. _ As reporters peppered him Wednesday with questions about his uncertain future, 49ers linebacker Winfred Tubbs paused and asked if they had heard something he hadn't.

No, nothing official has come down from the 49ers front office regarding possible salary cap-induced, postseason departures of expensive veterans such as Tubbs, linebacker Ken Norton Jr., left guard Ray Brown and wide receiver Jerry Rice. As this season winds to a close, however, so might the tenure of older players on this youth-laden squad.

"We've got some young players that can play. It's a business," said Tubbs, who is signed through 2002. …
