Mariucci apologized to Jauron for playing Rice, Owens late.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. _ Coach Steve Mariucci gave Jerry Rice a hug and congratulated Terrell Owens with a quick embrace and then hustled over to the opposite sideline to apologize to his friend, Chicago Bears Coach Dick Jauron.

To satisfy history, Mariucci violated an unwritten rule of coaching Sunday during the 49ers' 17-0 win, keeping his top players in the game until the end and pressing ahead with pass plays in the final minutes, though the 49ers had the victory well in hand.

"The first thing I did was run across the field and apologize to Dick Jauron if I offended him," said Mariucci, who was an assistant with Jauron in Green Bay under Mike Holmgren. "The same with their defensive coordinator, Greg Blache. We have a coaching fraternity, not to mention there are some of us that are pretty darn close friends. …
