May 24--Stop & Shop is returning to New Jersey after more than 17 years.

Seeking to cash in on strong brand recognition, Edwards Super Food Stores in New Jersey and New York is being converted to Stop & Shop, the Dutch owner of both chains announced Tuesday.

Stop & Shop said the conversions would start this summer, with five stores changed each week until all 73 operate under the new banner. Work should be completed by the end of the year.

"This gradual changeover should enable us to effectuate a smooth transition, which will be far less disruptive for all parties concerned," John Bussenger, a company vice president said Tuesday in a letter to union officials.
