May 16--No more cars will be sold at the Charleston Auto Auction.
Manheim Auctions of Atlanta, owner of the 2-year-old North Charleston business off Cross County Road, notified employees Monday that it is shutting down the auction block. The next scheduled auction was Thursday.
"It's just not a facility or business that fits with our type of auction," Darryll Ceccoli, Manheim's chief operating officer, said from Atlanta Tuesday.
The closing means 12 full-time workers and about three dozen part-timers are out of jobs. Ceccoli said those workers are welcome to apply for other jobs within the corporation.
The facility, at 3325 Hill Park Drive, will remain open for a couple of weeks to close out pending sales. But no further auctions will be held, Ceccoli said.
News of the closing was a "shock to everybody" at the facility, said an employee who wished not to be identified.
