Jun. 20--Hickory-based Corning Cable Systems, a unit of Corning Inc., will open a new 250,000-square-foot facility next to its current telecommunications cable plant in Hickory by mid-2001. The facility, which will employ 300 current workers but could eventually add new jobs, will produce flame-retardant optical cable used inside buildings.
Meanwhile, Paris based-Alcatel Telecommunications Cable Inc. said it would triple production at its fiber-optics plants, including its Claremont location, within the next two years.
