Jul. 10--THE HICKORY METRO SPORTS COMMISSION now has two strikes against it in its search for an executive director.
But the group that launched the commission last year, the Catawba County Chamber of Commerce, remains optimistic it will score a big hit.
Two people have turned down the director's job after extensive searches, chamber President Bryan Derreberry said last week. Both choices decided to stay in their current positions.
"We've been awfully close," Derreberry said. "We've had strong candidates with good fund-raising and sports events backgrounds. It's not like it's someone right out of high school or college."
The commission wants to attract more amateur and intercollegiate sports events to the area and to create a Catawba County sports hall of fame.
But because the director's job is new, there are issues about long-term viability and community acceptance, Derreberry said.
The commission's search panel is looking at a third finalist. Derreberry hopes to make a hire by early next month.…
