Jul. 4--Every region in Tennessee with an ozone monitor is out of compliance with state and federal air regulations, says Tennessee Gov. Don Sundquist.
Hamilton County is one of those areas, and so is every other major metropolitan area in Tennessee, said Kim Olsen, a spokeswoman for the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.
"Under the old air standards, we had achieved 99 percent compliance," said Ms. Olsen on Monday. "But we have a new standard now, so we have a new goal."
In making his announcement, Gov. Sundquist was meeting a June 30 deadline set by the federal Environmental Protection Agency.
