Ferrari droptop
Word from Italy is that Ferrari will launch a 575 Maranello roadster. Unlike the 550 Barchetta, the open-air 575 will feature a folding glass hardtop that lies on top of the trunk, rather than inside. Ferrari is keeping details hush-hush, but the company showed a mock-up of the car to elite customers at Pebble Beach. Expect it to debut at the Geneva show in March.
Volvo adds V8
Volvo figures about 30 percent of sport/utility vehicle buyers in the United States use V8 power, so the Swedish automaker is adding a V8 to its popular XC90 sport/ute.
Volvo started looking for a V8 to wedge into the XC90 in May 1999, and wanted a 60-degree engine. At the same time Ford was looking at buying Volvo. Ford engineers tipped off Volvo that Yamaha had had some experience building 60-degree blocks for the Taurus SHO. Voila A Yamaha-designed and built V8 specific to the XC90.
