NYSE stocks rose until about midday Monday, then proceeded to give up most of their gains. The Dow closed nearly flat with a 0.02% increase, while the S&P 500 added 0.2%. The small-cap S&P 600 rose 0.6%. Big Board volume was slightly higher.

United Industrial gapped up 1.92, or 6%, to a new high of 32.63 on six times usual trade. The maker of unmanned aerial vehicles shares the top Stock Checkup Overall Rank in its 15-stock Electronics-Military Systems group. The group has fared well amid continued warfare in Iraq. It ranked No. 4 in Monday's issue, up from No. 53 three months ago.
