Plasma levels of unbound protein S are decreased in individuals with HIV infection and decline as HIV disease progresses, a French study indicates.
Protein S is a vitamin K-dependent plasma protein that inhibits coagulation and enhances vitamin C activities. Some 60 percent of circulating protein S is reversibly bound to the C(4)b-binding protein of the complement system; the remainder exists as a biologically active free protein.
