Sep. 12--CARLSBAD, Calif. -- Jaimie Hoffmann, 14, and her mom huddled over a desk with teacher Richard Reck last week, going over the algebra, English, world history, biology, and other assignments Jaimie must complete while she is on a trip to New York City.
Into the same classroom walked a tanned Shaun White, 18, with an imposing pile of finished homework in geometry, algebra, history and more to give to teacher Katy Heritage. He had completed it during a month in New Zealand, from which he had just returned.
Vacationers? Hardly.
Both are full-time students in the Carlsbad Seaside Academy, a program entering its seventh year at Carlsbad Unified School District.
It is one of the district's "best kept secrets," according to school board President Kelli Moors. It offers assisted home schooling for kindergarten through eighth grade and carefully supervised independent studies for high school students who can't be tied to a regular school day.
