Sep. 15--SAN JOSE, Calif.--Over the next couple of weeks, Silicon Valleyites will be choosing political parties -- in both senses of the word.
On Tuesday, Vice President Al Gore will return to the valley for a much-ballyhooed fundraiser featuring musician Elton John and venture capitalist John Doerr. (The location, Democratic Party officials say, is still under wraps; initial speculation had it taking place at Doerr's Woodside home, but that seems to have fallen through.)
The same evening Doerr and Gore are soaking up Elton's croonings, another major gathering of digerati will be taking place at San Jose's Fairmont Hotel. The Bay Area Council will be honoring Eugene Kleiner and Thomas Perkins -- co-founders of the fabled VC firm that Doerr heads -- as well as Applied Materials Inc. Chief Executive Jim Morgan.
