Sep. 14--Chase Manhattan Corp.'s purchase of J.P. Morgan & Co. will have little effect on most Chase customers in Texas, the two companies said Wednesday.

Although the combined companies will carry the name J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., few Chase customers in Texas will see a change. This will not be a replay of the NationsBank-Bank of America deal, with lots of new signs and a massive switchover in individual checking accounts, according to Chase and J.P. Morgan executives.

Two big reasons are that J.P. Morgan has a small presence in Texas and doesn't focus on mainstream customers here, said J.P. Morgan spokeswoman Alexandra…
