Sep. 19--Birch Telecom Inc. received some important commitments from Southwestern Bell before endorsing Bell's bid for out-of- state long distance service, a Birch attorney said Tuesday.

Greg Lawhon, senior vice president and general counsel of Birch, said Bell committed to lower a charge paid by Birch and other non-Bell telephone companies when those companies convert a customer from Bell.

"I believe that that charge is $60 now and it's currently zero in Texas, and they've agreed to make it zero in Oklahoma," he said.
