Sep. 29-- Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has joined with two other schools to create a $16 million engineering research center that will focus on the detection and imaging of objects underground, underwater or embedded deep within other materials.

CenSSIS -- the Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems -- has been established by the National Science Foundation using a $16 million grant from the agency, industry partners and the participating universities. RPI will work along with researchers from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez and Boston's Northeastern University, where the center is based.
