Sep. 27--A Dallas meat processor that flunked four federal bacterial inspections and supplied millions of pounds of ground beef to the nation's lunch program filed Tuesday for bankruptcy.
Supreme Beef Processors and Packers filed for Chapter 11 reorganization at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Texas. The closely held company will lay off 300 workers and shut down its fresh and frozen ground beef plants in Dallas and Ladonia, Texas, on Friday.
During the last year, Supreme Beef had fought efforts by the government to halt its production.
