Video Island merged with ScreenSelect last week in the biggest deal yet in the nascent area of online DVD rental. But everyone in the sector thinks there are many similar deals to come, fuelled by the worry of competition from the likes of Netflix and Blockbuster.

With at least 15 independent firms out there, from AnotherDVD to Zoovies, it has become the accepted wisdom in the industry that only a handful can survive.

LoveFilm's CEO Mark Livingstone says, "This time next year there will be four in the market: Blockbuster, Netflix, us and one other. I guarantee it. Anyone else out there will be up for sale."

Roy Gunter, CEO of Qflicks, which merged with Movietracks earlier this year, says, "There's room for one independent player."

Invasion of the market snatchers

It might have invented the market and it's clearly casting a shadow over an entire sector of the UK Internet scene, but just how big a threat does Netflix present?
