Nov. 2--Congress is poised to approve a beach-rebuilding plan for North Carolina's Outer Banks that would cost $1.6 billion over the next 50 years.
Rebuilding sand dunes and beaches in the Dare County communities of Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk would initially cost $71 million, says the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The costs don't stop there because more sand would have to be regularly pumped from offshore to stabilize the beaches. The price soars further when adjusted for inflation.
